The Bible and Understanding Scripture The Bible is God’s word to His people. Christians are taught to read and study the Bible daily. A new person in the body of Christ would understand reading and studying just as one reads a regular book or study material. Often Christians are not taught how to read and study, instead they internalize reading and studying as memorization of the Bible because most Christians can remember the word of God without a complete understanding of scripture. When Christians are taught the history of the Bible and how the Bible should be interpreted, they will be able to understand the message God is relaying to them. An exegesis is to hear the word of God as the people in the Bible heard the word of God to find out what was the original intent of the words of the Bible. (Stuart, 2003) Most Christians unknowingly do exegesis by explaining how people lived in the Bible days and why we do not do those same things today. Although anyone can do an exegesis it is recommended to seek the help of an expert when attempting to do a reputable exegesis if needed. Anytime Scripture is read an exegesis is the first step in interpretation. There many tools to help develop a good exegesis, but the main elements are to read Scripture carefully and ask the right questions. (Stuart, 2003) The two basic questions one should ask while reading Scripture are: those that relate to context and content. A good translation, a Bible dictionary, and good commentaries are great tools for one to use on a quest to developing a good exegesis. The second task is hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is basically explaining or interpreting biblical concepts, theories, and principles from the Bible days into today’s society. Hermeneutics is necessary to prevent people from interpreting their own philoso phy of the Bible. A solid exegesis is included in hermeneutics.
